Dr. Shawn needs our help

Posted in: Animal Health, Dr. Shawn's Radio Shows, Help Needed — Tigger the Terror @ 4:41 pm

Hi Everyone,

Please help out my friend Dr. Shawn.  Here is a letter that he sent to his friends asking for help.  Please read it, pass it on, and take the time to help him out.  By helping him, you are also helping out the furry animals like myself.  Thank you so much.

Pawz Up,

Tigger

Dear Friend and Fellow Pet Owner:

As you may have heard, my column has recently stopped running in the Dallas Morning News. The paper is undergoing changes and my column is one that was cut.

As a valued reader I appreciate your past support of my writing. I’m contacting you today to ask you a big favor. Would you take a moment and call the paper and tell them that you are disappointed not to get my column each week? Let them know that you enjoyed reading my column and would like to see it run again. If enough of you contact the paper and express an interest in the column, it is likely that the paper will begin running it again.

There are 2 people to contact. The first is section editor Lisa Kresl at 214-977-8800 or

lkresl@dallasnews.com. The second person is the newspaper editor Bob Mong at (bmong@dallasnews.com.) If possible, simply email your request to both Lisa and Bob.

As my way of saying Thank You for your help, I’d like to offer you the following gift. Mike Fantetti of Pet Togethers (www.pettogethers.net/thepawzcauze) has generously agreed to allow my readers to get substantial savings on Vim & Vigor, one of my favorite pet supplements. Pet Togethers is one of several companies for whom I consult, and I LOVE their product! Mike is also a fan of my column and has agreed to help support my work by making this offer to any of you who wish to try this great supplement. Simply call 866-NET-PET-1 (866-638-7381) and tell them about this offer, which is good until February 20, 2007.

Thanks again for your support. Hopefully your interest and response will get the column reinstated, and I can continue my work in teaching pet owners to care for their pets naturally!Dr. Shawn

Be sure to listen to my show, Dr. Shawn-The Natural Vet show, on Martha Stewart Radio Sirius Channel 112, live every Tuesday night at 7-9 PM CST. On March 21 I’ll be talking with noted veterinary surgeon Dr. Daryl McDonald about what’s new in surgery for pets.
On March 14 I’ll be talking with Mike Murphy of MVP Laboratories. They make a GREAT supplement to prevent and treat cognitive disorder (Alzheimer’s) in dogs and cats. Some great stuff-be sure not to miss this show!!
*Last week on my radio show I spoke with Mike Murphy of MVP Laboratories. They make a GREAT supplement called Cholodin to prevent and treat cognitive disorder (Alzheimer’s) in dogs and cats.  *Question of the week:  Dear Dr. Shawn:”I really enjoy your column and find it to be informative and very helpful. I wonder if I could ask you a question regarding my 10 year old dachshund, Lucy. I took her for an exam last week to precede a full dental cleaning and her blood tests revealed her liver enzymes to be elevated four fold. The veterinarian wants to do a follow up blood test in a few weeks before proceeding. Should I be concerned? She is presently overweight but on a successful diet, so the weight will come off. Do you think the weight could cause the elevated liver enzymes?”  A:”First I would make sure the enzymes that were elevated were actually liver enzymes. I’ve done a number of consults with owners for a similar problem. Upon close inspection of the blood tests it was actually the adrenal gland enzyme that was elevated and not the liver enzymes. This is a different condition and requires a different therapy. Check to see that the ALT enzyme is the one that is elevated (if the ALP enzyme is elevated and the ALT is normal this is unlikely to be a liver problem.) Many older dogs have mild liver enzyme elevation and usually it is not a problem. I usually treat these dogs with liver supporting therapies like Hepatosupport and Whole System Liver and recheck the blood in 2-4 weeks. If the blood test is improved then I would proceed with the dental cleaning. If the liver enzyme has increased we need to look for a cause. Finally, keep in mind that the dental infection might be contributing to a mild case of liver infection and inflammation, so cleaning the  teeth will need to be done as well.”
