The final straw for animal advocates in Kentucky and those who support us was the incident which happened at 478 Peeled Oak Road in Owingsville KY (Bath County) when Dusty, a golden retriever mix, was shot in the leg and hung in the front yard of Wesley Barrett’s home on the end of a tractor. Passers by were shocked at this display and the authorities were called.
Mr. Barrett contended that a neighbor shot his “pet” and he hung Dusty in his front yard to show the neighbor he had successfully killed his dog.
Mr. Barrett, however, allegedly failed to identify the mysterious neighbor and allegedly declined to press charges.
While WLEX-TV covered the story, apparently investigative journalism is a lost art. The reporter from WLEX-TV did not ask the following questions that we would like answered by Mr. Barrett.
1) If you were outraged enough to hang Dusty in your front yard, why did you not press charges?
2) Could you please identify the “shooter” for us so appropriate measures can be taken?
3) What kind of person hangs a “beloved” pet in their front yard like a hunting trophy, regardless of how the pet died?
We also have been advised that law enforcement simply shook Mr. Barrett’s hand, provided their contact information and offered to be of service in the future should he require it.
Dusty’s body was not confiscated and we can only assume that by now, the “evidence” has been destroyed.
In memory of Dusty, we can no longer sit by and allow Kentucky government to ignore our pleas for humane treatment of animals and just punishment of their abusers.
Since we can not change their hearts and minds, we must change our legislators.
